HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – It’s usually a snowy cold day In February when the Community Action Agency hosts the Walk For Warmth, and that’s how they want it.
It’s a reminder of what it’s like to be cold and works as a motivator says Program Manager Paula Huyser. Keeping kids warm in the winter is the agencies priority. The agency in Ottawa County has a variety of programs and services for families for low income families with the biggest one for utility assistance.
Huyser says teams from companies, schools, churches and individuals walk every year raising money through pledges.
Right now the agency is looking to get businesses involved with the walk. ” They can be a donor for the event with different levels of donating. They can send walking teams or we have local businesses donate items for the gift bags we give to our walkers. Things such as pens, notepads and more with the companies logo on them.” says Huyser. Contact Katherine Van Sweden at 616-393-5606 or by email if your business in interested in helping.
Special Guest Speaker at this years walk is Tabitha Wolters. A working Mother who has experience on both sides of assistance.
Every year there is a Walk for Warmth Poster Contest open to area schools. Last year’s winner of the poster contest was Sarah Neumann, a Junior at Zeeland West High School. She used a stitch design as her motif. 2017’s poster winner will be unveiled soon.
The Community Action Agency’s Walk For Warmth is in it’s 29th year. Last year through their range of programs, they assisted over 3,500 qualified households in Ottawa County. If you are in need of assistance, details on how to apply for assistance are online.
The Walk For Warmth is February 11 at 8:30 a.m. at City on a Hill in Zeeland. Pledge forms are available online.
