HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 18, 2022) – A reported garage fire turned out to be a residential blaze that kept Holland Public Safety crews busy on the south side on Sunday evening.
According to Fire Operations Captain Chris Tinney, first responders were dispatched to a house in the 700 block of Crestview Street, near West 32nd Street and Graafschap Road, around 7:20 PM. They found that flames were already on the first floor of the two-floor structure, with heat and smoke throughout the building. The blaze was brought quickly under control, but there was “significant smoke and heat damage throughout; however, no other structures in close vicinity of the home sustained any damage,” Tinney said in a department statement.
The residents were not home at the time, and no firefighters were injured, but three cats, two dogs, and two rabbits inside perished in the blaze. No cause of the fire was immediately determined, nor were any initial damage estimates made.
Tinney added, “The department would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to test their smoke alarms monthly and replace units that are more than 10 years old.”
