1/29 Sunday: The Turner Project at Holland Area Arts Council- Generously funded by Hope College’s 2016 Jacob E. Nyenhuis faculty development summer research grant program, The Turner Project is the result of an intensive study of the painting techniques of 19th century British painter J.M.W. Turner. Following ten days in London studying Turner’s paintings, Professor of Art Katherine Sullivan and Art/Psychology major and student collaborator Hannah Jacobs returned to Hope’s campus to apply Turner’s techniques to their respective painting processes. This exhibition is the outcome of that research and process. 150 E 8th St, Holland; 12-3pm; Free.
1/30 Monday: Knickerbocker Film Series – Loving- The Hope College Knickerbocker Theatre Winter Film Series begins with Loving. The film tells the story of Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple whose challenge of their anti-miscegenation arrest for their marriage in Virginia led to a legal battle that would end at the U.S. Supreme Court. 86 East 8th Street, Holland; 7:30pm; Adult — $7 Senior, Faculty & Staff — $6 Hope Students — Free.
1/31 Tuesday: Mom’s Night Out at Pizza Ranch- Come join Mosaic Foster and Adoptive Ministry for an evening with other moms – NO COOKING, NO CLEAN-UP! Just food, fellowship and fun! They’ll cover the buffet – you just come! It’s a great chance to meet some other moms, share some stories, get some ideas or just laugh together! 2/2 Thursday: Daniel Carlsten at Herman Miller- Design Yard- AIGA West Michigan is proud to partner with Herman Miller Branding to host Daniel Carlsten at Herman Miller Design Yard Thursday, February 2nd. Art director, graphic designer, and illustrator Daniel Carlsten is a master of visual metaphors. Join him for a flight through his portfolio of provocative designs that transcend the boundaries of language and culture. 2/3 Friday: Super Bowl Eats at Fenn Valley Vineyards & Wine Cellar- njoy a fun evening including a tapas style three course meal while you learn how to take your Super Bowl party to a new level! 2/4 Saturday: Holland Civic Theatre Presents: Lion in Winter- Sibling rivalry, adultery and dungeons – Lion in Winter, by James Goldman, is a modern day classic. Comedic in tone, dramatic in action – the play tells the story of the Plantagenet family who are locked in a free for all of competing ambitions to inherit a kingdom. The queen, and wealthiest woman in the world, Eleanor of Aquitaine, has been kept in prison since raising an army against her husband, King Henry II. Let out only for holidays, the play centers around the inner conflicts of the royal family as they fight over both a kingdom, as well as King Henry’s paramour during the Christmas of 1183. As Eleanor says, “every family has its ups and downs,” and this royal family is no exception. 50 West Ninth Street, Holland; 7:30pm; $10-$18.
