GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Governor Gretchen Whitmer says the Michigan State Police will conduct a transparent, independent investigation of the shooting of Patrick Lyoya by a Grand Rapids Police officer. State Police will then turn their findings over to prosecutors for any further action.
Following yesterday’s release of video of the struggle and shooting of Lyoya the governor said she spoke with the victim’s family and Lyoya’s father urged any protest in his son’s honor be peaceful. Whitmer also said communities must come together to build a future where Black Michiganders are afforded equal rights, dignity and safety.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump will have much more to say following the release of the video of the shooting of Patrick Lyoya. Crump represents the Lyoya family. Lyoya was shot and killed by a Grand Rapids officer in a struggle during a traffic stop earlier this month. Crump is holding a press conference this afternoon and has called for the officer to be prosecuted for Lyoya’s death.
The Michigan Attorney General is among the state and local leaders weighing-in on the video of the deadly police-involved shooting in Grand Rapids. Dana Nessel commented on the video saying she expects the Grand Rapids Police to fully cooperate with the State Police investigation. She says her office is available to assist the county prosecutor if requested.
