HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – A 56-year-old man suffered minor injuries in an early afternoon garage fire on Holland’s West Side on Friday afternoon.
First responders were called to the residence in the 400 block of West 22nd Street, near Ottawa Avenue, just before 2 PM to find one garage fully engulfed and a garage in an adjacent property also aflame. It took crews about 15 minutes to bring the blaze under control and remained on the scene for about three hours.
Public Safety Captain of Fire Operations Chris Tinney didn’t go into details as to what led to the fire and what caused the unnamed victim to suffer smoke inhalation. The man was treated and released. The one garage was “a total loss,” according to Tinney, with no damage estimates immediately available.
The Fire Chief added in a statement, “This was a busy afternoon for the department. The early efforts to contain the fire were challenging due to one of the units on the initial assignment being committed on another emergency and being delayed. Later into this incident mutual aid was received by the Hamilton Fire Department to respond to 3 subsequent incidents that occurred during this fire.”
Holland Township Fire Department crews also assisted Holland Public Safety in this incident.
