HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – A 29-year-old man remains in critical condition at midday following a shooting at a Holland convenience store.
No names have been disclosed thus far in the incident at the Columbia One Stop off of Columbia Avenue and East 17th Street after 10 PM last night. Holland Public Safety officers say that surveillance video showed the shooting victim “violently punching” a 39-year-old female clerk who had been “in a domestic relationship” with the man and was thrown down to the ground when a 43-year-old customer arrived and tried to intervene. The man then “violently attacked” the customer and attempted to grab the customer’s gun, at which time the customer shot the man twice.
According to a statement from Public Safety Captain Keith Mulder, “the (female) victim’s statement, the witness’ statements and the video evidence were all consistent with the shooter’s version of what happened.” The customer was licensed to carry a concealed weapon, and the gun was properly licensed at the time.
The shooting victim, who is being treated at Spectrum-Butterworth Hospital, had been wanted on unrelated charges prior to this incident. The Ottawa County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case before determining any criminal charges in the matter.
Public Safety investigators are still accepting tips through calls to the department or through Silent Observer.
