LANSING, MI (WHTC) – School districts in Allegan and Ottawa County will receive part of a state grant to purchase equipment and/or technology to improve the safety and security of their school building.
The Michigan State Police (MSP) says $2 million dollars will go to 25 public school districts, 24 non-public schools and three charter schools.
In Allegan County Hopkins Public Schools will receive $10,215 and Wayland Union Schools $98,845 of the two million. St. Therese Catholic School in Wayland is to receive $14,106. In Ottawa County Jenison Christian Schools will receive $37,325 dollars.
There were 84 applications received, totaling over $4.6 million in requests. Grant applications were reviewed by a committee that included representatives from the MSP, the Michigan Sheriffs’ Association, Michigan Association of Non-Public Schools and the Executive Office of the Governor.
The review committee gave priority to proposals that sought to secure access points at school buildings, as this is one of the best and most cost effective ways to improve school safety and security.
A complete list of award recipients is available at online. Grant recipients have until Aug. 30, 2017, to spend their awards.
Over 62,500 students will benefit from these security improvements.
