HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – Today is Fat Tuesday and all around the country there are celebrations marking the end of Mardi Gras.
Fat Tuesday is a day to eat those rich fatty foods before the fasting ritual of the Lenten season. A favorite food is the paczki which is a polish donut filled with a sweet filling like custard or jelly.
Paczki is pronounced “poonch-key” and area bakeries have been serving them up for decades. At the Wesco bakery in Norton Shores they have been baking and preparing Monday into the morning hours on Tuesday.
Angela Goulet is a manager at the Wesco on Lakewood Blvd. in Holland and says they are selling them at all Wesco gas stations in Michigan.
“We have 12 flavors including peanut butter and jelly, banana cream, lemon, raspberry, barvarian cream, apple, strawberry, orange cream and even key lime cream. They run $1.19 each but you get them at a better rate if you buy a 1/2 dozen or dozen.”
Goulet says they are taking orders for them throughout the day or just stop in and get your fill.
