SPRING LAKE TWP, MI (WHTC) – It didn’t have the impact of what happened in suburban Detroit during the holidays, but a sinkhole has blocked a roadway east of Spring Lake.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Brian Buter, a motorist whose vehicle got stuck in a pothole along 108th Avenue north of Cleveland Street called Central Dispatch around 6 AM on Wednesday. “When the responding deputy arrived and examined the situation, he saw that the entire southbound lane and part of the northbound lane was bowed, indicating that it was caved in underneath the tarred portion of the roadway,” the lawman explained. “A few minutes after the car was removed from the pothole by an area wrecker service, a large sinkhole developed, which is estimated to be 20 feet by 15 feet, and approximately 10 feet deep.”
The unnamed motorist was unhurt. County Road Commission crews blocked off the damaged roadway, and Buter said that it would take several days before repairs can be completed, as water and sewer lines are also affected.
