LANSING, MI (WHTC) – Legislation introduced by State Representative Daniela R. García, which will return school schedule decisions to local districts, was approved today by the House Education Reform Committee.
The bill grants districts greater flexibility in implementing school calendars and schedules in addition to removing both from contract negotiations.
In a statement Garcia said that the individual needs of students, their families and teachers are what is at the heart of this discussion. The bill will ensure that all decisions regarding the schedule and calendar are focused on what is in the best interest of educating students.
The vote is a week after Garcia was joined by Allendale Public School Superintendent Dan Jonker and Mecosta Osceola ISD Superintendent Curtis Finch before the House Education Reform Committee to testify in support of the legislation.
Garcia says she’s focused on what’s best for students.
