LANSING, MI (WHTC) – Teachers in Michigan could lost their impact over school calendars and schedules if a House bill passes.
House Bill 4161 would allow school boards and administrators to set the district’s schedule. Right now districts are allowed to set the start date of the school year, but other dates must be in agreement with teacher’s unions.
The bill is sponsored by Holland’s Daniela Garcia. The Republican who represents District 90 says they want to make sure that local school districts are fulfilling some of the requirements they put into law.
“We have five days of professional development for current teachers, eight days of professional development for new teachers, required mandatory mentoring program and we have additional time restraints with the testing days we have on our calender. What this bill would do is allow our local school districts to remove that from the collective bargaining conversation so that we can make sure that were putting our students first and thinking about them as we improve academics.”
House Bill 4163 advances to the House for its consideration.
Garcia says she is always through the lens of the child and making sure they are getting the best opportunity to succeed in the classroom and making sure that families and teachers are aware of what their calendar and schedules are going to look like before they start the school year.
