HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – The search is apparently over as a suspect in a late Wednesday morning shooting that wounded a 25-year-old man during an attempted robbery in the Holland Heights neighborhood is now in custody.
Public Safety officers were called to Holland Hospital just before 12 Noon shortly after the victim admitted himself into the facility with a gunshot wound to the chest. The unnamed man said that he was sitting in his parked vehicle with another 20-year-old man near the Ridgeland Apartments complex when they were approached by a black male initially described in his late teens to early 20’s. The suspect demanded items from the victim and then fired one round from a handgun into the chest of the man before fleeing. The victim was treated for a non-life threating wound and released; there was no indication from Public Safety that the other man involved was harmed in any way.
Justin Mason, the 21-year-old suspect, had reportedly been seen walking by residents in the days preceding this incident. On Wednesday evening, officers were able to apprehend him without incident, and Mason was arraigned on Thursday in Holland District Court on various charges. Judge Susan Jonas ordered him held on 750 thousand dollars bond, and Mason remains in the Ottawa County Jail.
The investigation remains open, and anyone with any information is asked to contact Holland Public Safety or Silent Observer.
