Erna Smith, age 96, went to her heavenly home on Wednesday, April 6, 2022.
Erna was born on May 9, 1925, in Hazen, North Dakota. As a teen, she moved with her family to Hopkins, MI. She married Dale and they settled in Zeeland to raise their family. Erna retired from Zeeland Public Schools, where she worked in foodservice. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and enjoyed being involved in Women’s ministries.
After being blessed with 71 years of marriage, Erna was preceded in death by her husband, Dale in 2020, her sons, Doyle Smith, and Bradley Smith; son-in-law, John McCormack; brother, Norm Oster; sisters, Irma (Ray) Wamhoff, Del (Bud) Tarno, Vi (Bill) Seals, and many brothers and sisters-in-law.
She is survived by her children, Ronda McCormack, Jymm (Judy) Smith, Brenda (Mark) Schout, Karen (Kelly) Van Koevering; grandchildren, Patti (Patrick) Klemmet, John (Lisa) McCormack, Luke Hackney, Andrew (Katie) Schout, Erin (Dave) Birkenmeier, Kaleigh Schout, Kyle (Tiffinie) VanKoevering, Alex VanKoevering, Maxton (Karly) VanKoevering; 8 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild; sister, Gladys Schulz; sister-in-law, Betty Nolting; and sister-in-law, Ardith (Lee) Long.
Funeral services are at 10:00 am on Tuesday, April 12 at Zion Lutheran Church, 77 West 32nd St. Holland, MI 49423 with Rev. Ryan Winningham officiating. The service will be followed by a time of visitation with the family.
Burial to take place in Zeeland Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in Erna’s honor may be given to Zion Lutheran Church.
