HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – Thunderstorms are rolling in over Lake Michigan Thursday morning almost as if Mother Nature knows it’s Severe Weather Awareness Week in Michigan.
Storm Team 8 Meteorologist Matt Kirkwood from WOOD TV was a guest of Talk of the Town hosted by Ed Veschuer. Kirkwood says they have new technologies that are really helping to track tornadoes. One is called a correlation coefficient.
“With this new dual pol radar, we’re actually able to see debris lifted into the air. We used to just be able to see the rotation and the circulation. Now with lifted debris, that yes, that tornado is actually reaching the ground or that funnel cloud is reaching the ground. We have now the dual pol radar and nwo we have something else amazing which is the GOES-16 satellite which has 4-5 times better resolution that we can see the clouds and the convection develop.”
