LANSING, MI (WHTC) – A bill before a House committee would prohibit Michigan motorists from using hand-held electronic devices while driving.
The House Transportation Committee heard testimony Tuesday. It is currently illegal to text while driving, but the new legislation would add penalties for using a hand-held device to make calls, check-e-mail, use social media or browse the Internet.
The bill would allow drivers to use hands-free methods to make calls.
A survery in December of 2016 commissioned by the Michigan State Police shows that nearly one in five Michigan drivers consider themselves addicted to their cell phones.
Forty-one percent admit they text while driving on a regular basis and 26 pecent say they do it daily, even though it’s a civil violation in Michigan. The poll conducted by the Glengariff Group sampled 400 young adults in their 20s and 30s.
