HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Many veterans struggle every year during the Fourth of July holiday as fireworks can bring on post traumatic stress disorder.
Veterans can get yard signs from a national group to alert neighbors to the fact a military veteran lives there.
Dr. Sarah Mallis of the Wyoming VA Health Care Center says fireworks that get lit in neighborhoods can be especially traumatic for military veterans.
“Unfortunately a lot of veterans find themselves sequestered in their basement using noise cancelling headphones or whatever else they can.”
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency host fireworks-free camping at several state parks every year from July 1-4.
