WEST OLIVE, MI (WHTC) – Just what caused the deck filled with visitors at one of Ottawa County’s parks to collapse earlier this month?
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Parks Director John Scholtz, the laminated veneer lumber used on the deck at the Weaver House in Pine Bend Park was of “the wrong material to use in the outdoor environment of this deck.”
On the evening of June 16th, a joint beam sheared off at one of the eight-by-eight treated posts, causing a V-shaped collapse. Between 20 and 30 persons were on the 12-year-old deck at the time, some of who suffered minor injuries.
Scholtz said that the Weaver House will remain open, but that the deck will continue to be off-limits to visitors until it can be rebuilt with proper materials. No timeframe for when that will happen was announced.
