GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A 72-year-old man has died after a tree fell on a home in Grand Haven Friday morning, July 7.
According to Public Safety Director Jeff Hawke, Lawrence Thon was unaware of the storms that rolled through a subdivision just south of Grand Haven State Park around 3 AM. The large tree fell through an addition to the residence and struck him in his bed, killing him instantly. His wife, who was standing at the front door of the home, was able to escape safely.
The incident apparently stemmed from a line of strong storms that went across the northern tier of communities in Ottawa County, causing numerous power outages from downed lines. Consumers Energy reports several thousand of its customers are without electricity, mainly north and northeast of the Holland/Zeeland area, while a handful of Holland BPW customers were also affected. Restoration efforts could last through the weekend, according to Consumers’ spokesman Roger Morgenstern.
Residents are reminded to treat all downed and low-lying power lines as if they are live and to call 911 to report the situation.
