ALLEGAN COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — An Allegan County man who lied to police about hitting an elderly pedestrian with his pickup has been sentenced to a year in jail and ordered to pay more than $110,000 in restitution.
35-year-old Ryan Mcrae Cubbage of Douglass struck 88-year-old Jean Beaty while traveling on 117th Avenue near 56th Street in Clyde Township on June 13th of 2020.
According to the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office, Cubbage showed up at the home of Beaty’s family afterwards with a badly injured Beaty inside of his truck and said that he had found her alongside the road. Beaty died several days later following the crash.
Further investigation of trace evidence revealed that the elderly woman was struck by Cubbage’s pickup.
He earlier pleaded no contest to failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious injury. Charges of lying to a police officer and failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in death were dismissed at sentencing.
