HUDSONVILLE, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – The city of Hudsonville has received one-million dollars for a development project in the downtown ares.
The funding is for a project that will transform Harvey Street into a Dutch-inspired “woonerf,” which will make the area more pedestrian-friendly.
State Rep. Roger Victory says a “woonerf” is a walkable pedestrian area and a unique downtown gathering walkway. Victory says the allocation comes from the Michigan Initiative Funding.
“For this project here it helps the downtown development similar to how you see what really moved Holland forward years ago when they put the snowmelt system in. People want to have identity to community. So Hudsonville is experiencing a lot of urban sprawl. So you’ve got the millennials looking for identity and the uniqueness to the downtown area.”
Also planned for the area is an archway and splashpad. Areas to hold concerts will also be added. The first phase of construction is almost finished, and the money will go towards the second phase, which will re-develop Harvey Street between Cherry and Plaza avenues.
The second phase is set to be finished in the summer of 2018.
