He is survived by his wife of 56 years Elaine Smits; his children and grandchildren: Susan and David Macauley (Gwen, Stephanie, and Catie); Kathy and Jerry Mulder (Kurt, Nicholas, Jacqueline, and Marie and John Norder), James and Kerri Sue Smits (Kylie, Conner, and Kierea); his brother Chuck and Jan Smits; his mother-in-law Ella Ter Haar; his brothers-in-law: Steve and Pat Britt, Chuck and Gayle Ter Haar, Arch and Wilma Ter Haar, and Shirts and Sherry Ter Haar.
Jim graduated from Holland Christian High School in 1960. He farmed in Vriesland for many years, he was employed at Michigan Livestock Exchange, he was the plant manager at Northern Fiber, and in his retirement, Jim drove truck for ITW Drawform. Jim served in the Army National Guard. Jim was a member of Calvary on 8th , he was a regular at Frank’s Restaurant, and he was an avid fisherman.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents Cornelius and Cornelia Smits, his father-in-law Floyd Ter Haar, his sister Jayne Britt and his brothers-in-law: Frederick Ter Haar and Don Ter Haar.
Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 pm Monday, March 28, 2022, at Yntema Funeral Home, 251 South State Street, Zeeland. The funeral service will be at 11 am Tuesday, March 29, 2022, at Calvary on 8th, 995 East 8th Street, Holland. Interment will be in Zeeland Cemetery.
