WAYLAND TWP., MI (WHTC) – A 40-year-old Holland woman died of an apparent drowning in Selkirk Lake late on Saturday evening.
The Allegan County Sheriff’s Department on Sunday night announced that various law enforcement agencies in the region assisted in notifying family members of the death of Anna Elizabeth Demshuk. According to witnesses, she and another woman had been taking an evening swim in the lake near Wayland. The unnamed woman was able to get to shore, but when deputies had been dispatched to the 800 block of 127th Avenue just before 12 Midnight, Demshuk had apparently been missing for about 45 minutes.
Members of the Dive team and Marine Patrol eventually found the victim in about 10 feet of water near a floating raft that was anchored in the lake. Despite efforts to revive her when she was taken to shore, Demshuk was pronounced dead at the scene by the Allegan County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Investigators initially believe that the incident was accidental in nature, and that medical issues, along with alcohol, may have been contributing factors. The Sheriff’s Department said in its Sunday night statement, “The incident will remain open pending further investigation.”
