LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A chain of health clubs based in West Michigan, with outlets in Holland, Allendale and Plainwell, is in the crosshairs of Bill Schuette.
The office of the state Attorney General announced on Tuesday the filing of class-action lawsuit in Kent County Circuit Court against Family Fitness, claiming that the chain violated the Michigan Consumer Protection Act for allegedly “holding consumers responsible for paying hundreds or even thousands of dollars on cancelled gym membership and personal training contracts.” The statement goes on to say that “many consumers had received credit reporting information showing they were being pursued by a (unnamed) collection agency acting on Family Fitness’ behalf.”
Shuette’s office had issued a cease and desist order on the chain in July stemming from these and other complaints that numbered nearly 300 this year alone, and the lawsuit is seeking “monetary relief on behalf of consumers.” A link for those wishing more information on the litigation is here.
