GRAND HAVEN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 23, 2022) – What was classified as a “critical incident” by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department in a residential area southeast of Grand Haven ended on Wednesday afternoon.
According to Detective Captain Jake Sparks, deputies responded to a call from a residence on Hofma Court, in a subdivision off of 152nd Avenue north of Ferris Street, around 1:40 PM on Tuesday. It was reported that a 40-year-old woman was armed and shots had been fired in the dwelling.
“Two family members, who were inside at the onset of the incident, exited the residence,” Sparks said in a department statement. “Neighbors (were) encouraged to shelter in the basement of their homes, and the public (was) asked to avoid the area. Critical Response Units and Crisis Negotiators (arrived) on the scene and (attempted) to establish contact with the female.”
Efforts continued through the night and morning hours to establish contact, and the State Police brought in some additional equipment to bolster the Sheriff’s Department efforts.
“At approximately 12:40 PM on March 23rd, members from the Critical Response Team entered the residence and located the 40 year old female inside,” Sparks continued. “The woman was deceased, and it appeared that she had died from self-inflicted injuries.”
No others were hurt in the incident, which remains under investigation. The woman’s name was not immediately disclosed.
