HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – The Weaver House at Pine Bend Park in West Olive is now operational after the deck collapsed in June.
The deck was reopened Sunday according to Jessica VanGinhoven with Ottawa County Parks. They were able to accommodate reservations throughout the summer using tents for those who had already booked the deck for events. VanGinhoven says they are very excited to have the deck reopened and confidant of the safety of the structure.
Fourteen people were injured when the deck collapsed in June 14. Parks Director John Scholtz says the laminated veneer lumber used on the deck at the Weaver House in Pine Bend Park was of “the wrong material to use in the outdoor environment of this deck.”
The cost to replace the deck is as follows:
- GMB Architecture + Engineering out of Holland designed the deck
- Terhorst & Rinzema Construction out of Ada constructed the deck
- It is essentially a brand new deck. We used some of the existing foundation and posts, but everything else is brand new, joists, decking, railing, and of course, the beams which were the source of the issue.
- The cost of the project was $99,000 and most of this was covered by insurance.
VanGinhoven says they are very excited to have the deck reopened and confidant of the safety of the structure.
