HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Holland’s annual signature event wants to embrace Mother’s Day, but there appears to be a catch.
During Wednesday night’s biweekly council work-study session, Tulip Time Festival Executive Director Gwen Auwerda pitched a proposal before Mayor Pro Tem Mike Trethewey and his colleagues. The First Ward Councilman said on “WHTC Morning News” today, “The Mother’s Day Market at Centennial Park sounds like a fantastic idea. A lot of this is weather-dependent, and as you know, alcohol on public property is not one of my favorite things. Council has very specifically said (that) Centennial Park is to be alcohol-free, but (Tulip Time) proposed a beer tent on 10th Street.
“We had some discussion about that,” Trethewey continued, “and there are a couple of other council members that say, ‘You know, we love the idea of being able to bring family here (to Centennial Park). Why does alcohol have to be involved with family?’”
Tulip Time also wants to allow roving vendors to serve waters and hydrating beverages for those watching the three festival parades on bleachers set up in the 8th Street Marketplace, targeting those who may not be able to easily get to concession stands. A formal vote on those proposals will take place at a future Council business meeting.
