MANILUS TWP, MI (WHTC) – A teenage boy died after a sledding accident Saturday in Allegan County.
Mason Dykstra, a 15-year-old freshman student at Hamilton High School was being pulled in a sled behind a vehicle by his 19-year-old brother when he hit a tree. According to Captain Chris Kuhn of the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office, his older brother had been driving a sport utility vehicle with a sled attached to the rear of the vehicle via a rope.
According to the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department, the collision happened just before noon on 133rd Avenue near 53rd Street. Mason was conscious after the incident and complained of some pain, He was treated via EMS and transported via helicopter to GR. During the flight Mason’s condition suddenly worsened and he was pronounced deceased upon arrival at the hospital.
Hamilton Community Schools Superintendent David Tebo says several hundred showed up to a vigil yesterday for Mason Dykstra. Tebo says he was a good kid all the way around.
Right now, police are treating it as an accident and a “family matter” and don’t yet know if the case will be given to the Allegan County Prosecutor’s Office.
Greif counselors will be available Monday to help the student body cope with the loss.
