HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – Hope College has hired alumnus Peter Stuursma as its new head football coach.
Stuursma previously served as head football coach at East Grand Rapids High School, where he led his teams to seven Michigan state football championships.
The 44-year old Stuursma becomes Hope’s seventh full-time head coach since 1920. As a player, Stuursma who graduated in 1993, served as co-captain for the Hope College football team during his senior year. He was a running back and special teams player. He received the team’s Allan C. Kinney award after the 1992 season despite playing in only three games due to an injury.
Stuursma worked as a graduate assistant on the NCAA Division II National Champion Northern Colorado football team. He has taught at Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central High School for three years prior to coaching at East Grand Rapids High School.
Stuursma and wife, Amy, also a ’93 Hope graduate, have three children: Hannah, 16; Robbie, age 14 and Mitchell, age 11.
Hope kicks off the 2016 season on Saturday September 3, 2016 against Monmouth, Illinois at Ray and Sue Smith Stadium.
