LANSING, MI (WHTC) – The American Red Cross has declared an emergency blood and platelet shortage following multiple severe winter storms throughout the country.
Todd Kulman, the agency’s Great Lakes spokesperson, says Michigan blood banks are trying to ramp up collection efforts to bridge the gap.
Kulman says severe winter weather has forced the cancellation of 300 blood drives nationally, resulting in 9,500 donations going uncollected.
The Red Cross needs to collect around 14,000 donations each day to keep up with demand.
