ROBINSON TWP, MI (WHTC) – Officials were dispatched to Robinson Township on Saturday afternoon following reports that a man had fallen through the ice on Sterns Bayou near north Cedar and 132nd Ave.
According to Sgt. Brian Buter of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department, the man Todd McDonald, 52, of Spring Lake, had waded out into the water in an attempt to rescue his dog, which had fallen through the ice. Several calls to the Ottawa County dispatch said a male subject was in waste-deep water screaming for help.
With the light fading, one caller said the subject was no longer visible, which prompted the Ottawa County dive team to be placed on stand-bye.
According to Sgt. Brian Buter of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, a short time later members of Robinson Township Fire and Rescue indicates that McDonald was out of the water and a resident who lives on Green Steet in the area got into his canoe and rescued McDonald’s dog.
Buter said the investigation showed that McDonald was never in complete distress but had remained in the water until the dog was rescued. He was checked out by paramedics on the scene and declined further treatment.
