HOLLAND (WHTC) — Mike Highstreet, one of Holland’s paid on-call firefighters, has been named Paid On-Call Firefighter of the Year by Holland Department of Public Safety.
Chief Matt Messer announced the honor in a statement emailed to the media by Fire Capt. Chris Tinney on Tuesday, March 1.
Highstreet started his career in Holland on Aug. 24, 2001; from then until recently taking an assignment at Station No. 3, he was a member of Fire Station No. 2’s crew.
His firefighting peers nominated Highstreet, citing his firefighting abilities, his team spirit and leadership skills. His superiors recognized him as a role model for those in the department and beyond.
Tinney noted that being a paid on-call firefighter is a second job for most, which takes “a high degree of commitment to training” as well as a dedication to responding to calls “any time of the day or night.”
