HOLLAND (WHTC) — Aubrey McClendon became notorious in West Michigan for his plans — and the subsequent legal wrangling — to redevelop a stretch of Saugatuck Township’s delicate sand dunes known as the Dennison property.
The billionaire made his fortune in oil and as of yesterday, faced a federal indictment for conspiracy to rig bids for oil and natural gas leases while he was CEO of Chesapeake Energy, which he founded.
Wednesday, the 56-year-old died in a fiery car crash in Oklahoma City, according to the Wall Street Journal and other media. Oklahoma City police told reporters McClendon was traveling “as a high rate of speed” in his 2013 Chevy Tahoe. The vehicle burst into flames and investigators coudln’t determine if he was wearing his seatbelt.
