HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – As March in Michigan starts with more wintry weather, Consumers Energy is encouraging residents to take steps to protect themselves against the lethal threat of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.
Carbon Monoxide is produced when appliances and consumer products are improperly operating or are not vented properly. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are sometimes hard to diagnose because they mimic the flu, but include headaches, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, and stinging or burning of the eyes.Prolonged exposure can cause disorientation, convulsions, loss of consciousness, and even death.
Aaron Kantor, director of emergency management and public safety at Consumers Energy advises to install an audible carbon monoxide detector in your house if you don’t already have one, inspect your furnace annually and change air filters once at least every other month, and to never heat your home with a gas stove or charcoal grill.
