HOLLAND (WHTC) — Initial election results from Ottawa and Allegan counties set this part of West Michigan apart from the rest of the state. While Donald Trump won Michigan’s Republican primary, he wasn’t the front runner here.
Ottawa County, Michigan’s most Republican stronghold, showed strong support for Ted Cruz, who won 23,862 votes, followed by John R. Kasich, 14,263; Donald J. Trump, 11,600; and Marco Rubio with 7,255.
Allegan County voters cast 7,291 ballots for Cruz, 5,086 for Trump, 4,462 for Kasich and 1,902 for Rubio.
Democrat Bernie Sanders picked up 14,334 votes in Ottawa County while Hillary Clinton got 7,686. Sanders had 60 percent of Allegan County’s votes, with 5,322, while Clinton trailed with 3,357.
Nearly 77,500 voters cast ballots for Ottawa County mental health millage, which passed, 45,963 to 31,497. The meaure allows the county to collect about $3 million for its community mental health department which had to lay off 35 workers last year.
Casco Township Republican Mary Whiteford won the 80th District Michigan Representative seat, vacated when Plainwell Republican Cindy Gamrat was ousted from office last year in the wake of a sex scandal and failed cover-up.
