HOLLAND (WHTC) — Roadwork season is upon us and one of the Michigan Department of Transportation’s biggest projects this year is in Ottawa County.
MDoT will fix four miles of U.S. 31, from Holland’s Eighth Street to Quincy Street. Crews are upgrading traffic signals now.
MDoT will update bridges and add an extra lane in each direction between Lakewood Boulevard and Quincy Street.
“The maujor impact to U.S. 31 won’t start up until after Tulip Time,” said John Richard, M-DOT’s Grand Region spokesman. He said drivers can expect some delays.
Fines are doubled in work zones.
Richard said drivers who slow down and pay attention could save lives. Last month, a worker was killed.
“There was sign crew working on an off ramp,” Richard said. “A truck left its lane and went onto the shoulder, hit and killed a worker and seriously injured another.”
Federal money covers 80 percent of the $24 million project cost; the state pays the rest.
