HOLLAND (WHTC) — A fatal crash Tuesday morning may have been the result of cellphone use, according to Allegan County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were called to a crash scene at 9 a.m. Tuesday near the intersection of 102nd Avenue and M40, according to a statement emailed from the Sheriff’s office to the media.
Police found a passenger car that had been hit by a box-type truck; the crash sent the car hurling into a nearby house.
The car’s driver was unconscious and declared dead at the scene. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts. The truck’s driver, who was unhurt, told police he thought he saw the car’s driver using her phone. Crash investigators noted the woman never attempted to stop or slow down for the stop sign and flashing traffic lights at the intersection. She had been eastbound on 102nd Avenue.
The crash remains under investigation. The drivers’ names are being withheld until notification of family members.
Sheriff’s deputies were assisted at the scene by the Gobles – Pinegrove Township Fire Department, Life EMS and Michigan State Police.
