MISHAWAKA, IN (WHTC) – The former owner of the Mi-Ro Golf Course in Douglas has died.
Joseph Migas succumbed at the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center on Wednesday at the age of 87. The Army vet from Chicago came to the Saugatuck/Douglas area and opened a golf course, hotel and restaurant on 16 acres off of the Blue Star Highway in 1962. The complex closed several years ago, and efforts to redevelop the land were hampered by the discovery of toxins in both groundwater and the soil due to previous industrial uses in and around the property.
Mr. Migas was in the news in the fall 2013 when his girlfriend told authorities that his legal guardian, one-time Allegan County Commissioner Terry Burns, allegedly took several thousand dollars from a trust account for Mr. Migas. Burns pleaded guilty to an attempted embezzlement count, in a deal with prosecutors that had other charges dropped, and served time in the Allegan County Jail.
Information on visitation and funeral arrangements for Mr. Migas can be found here.
