HOLLAND (WHTC) — The massive black cloud of smoke visible for approximately a mile in Holland Friday afternoon was simply a sign of housekeeping.
Firefighters from Holland Township and the City of Holland supervised a prescribed burn of invasive plants in Macatawa Marsh — specifically: Phragmites, Purple Loosestrife and Reed Canary grass.
The Outdoor Discovery Center Macatawa Greenway, Ann Arbor-based Plant Wise worked with firefighters for this project. Burning out the invasive plants leaves room for natural species to flourish, which in turn provides food resources for wildlife.
Outdoor Discover Center Macatawa Greenway post a series of remarkable photos on Facebook of what will be the only prescribed burn set for this season.
