OTSEGO, MI (WHTC) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has issued a unilateral order for the three paper companies responsible for dumping PCB’s into the Kalamazoo River to clean-up 1.5-miles of the waterway in southern Allegan County.
Georgia-Pacific, Weyerhaeuser and International Paper are now required to remove PCB’s from a stretch of the Kalamazoo River upstream of the Otsego Township Dam. The PCB-contaminated sediment and soil resulted from paper manufacturing and disposal operations that stopped in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
The EPA has ordered that this “time-critical” action be started late this summer and should be completed by spring of 2018.
