ZEELAND TWP, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 6, 2022) – The road construction season begins on Monday along the Lakeshore with a bridge replacement project east of Zeeland.
Contractors retained by the Ottawa County Road Commission are scheduled to start the process of replacing a bridge over the Macatawa River. As a result, Byron Road will be blocked off from I-196 to 76th Avenue, with traffic diverted at 64th Avenue to the east. The recommended detour will be 64th Avenue and Chicago Drive (M-121), with an alternate route being Adams Street.
Crews will be replacing a bridge beam and deck that had led to a 19-ton load restriction. With Byron Road expected to be an alternate route later this summer as I-196 between Zeeland and Hudsonville gets a road renovation, the replacement span is necessary to handle the anticipated increase in heaver truck traffic.
The project was initially planned for this past fall, but the combination of delays due to COVID 19 health protocols and supply chain issues pushed the work back to this spring. In addition, this project is part of a Michigan Department of Transportation pilot initiative that “bundles” 19 local bridge efforts under one contract.
The timeline for this project is through June 5th, shortly after the work on rebuilding I-196 is slated to begin.
