HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – What may be seen by some as a charitable effort for the Independence Day holiday may be viewed by others as a ploy to pressure lawmakers and government leaders into giving it free reign in Michigan.
At noon on Friday, uberX began special service of its ride-sharing service from Saugatuck north to Muskegon. Those using the Uber app could request a ride from an available driver in the area, and for every ride taken during the four-day weekend, Uber will donate a dollar to Mothers Against Drunk Driving in Michigan. This special service would only be available during this holiday weekend.
The promotion comes after the state House passed legislation last year that would standardize regulations on transportation network companies such as Uber and Lyft across Michigan, while the Senate is considering a different measure that would bring them under the limousine regulations umbrella.
Uber currently operates in Grand Rapids, the closest market to the Lakeshore. According to Holland city regulations, Uber drivers can drop off riders from outside of the city limits into the Tulip City, but cannot pick any rides up in Holland without applying for a taxi cab service license that must be reviewed by the City Council.
