HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – A long-time Ottawa County Commissioner has died.
Gordon Schrotenboer passed away on Tuesday in hospice care at the age of 84. A Holland High grad and a Korean War vet in the US Air Force, he spent 32 years with the Holland Board of Public Works before retiring as the utility’s Controller in 1992. During his tenure, he served as Chairman of Accountin, Finance and Information Systems with both the American Public Power Association and the Michigan Electric Utilities Association, among other duties.
Mr. Schrotenboer may have retired from the BPW, but he then began a second career as a county commissioner, serving 18 years in representing Holland’s North Side on that panel before he finally stepped down in 2010. Just as when he was with the utility, Mr. Schrotenboer wore a number of hats in representing the county on various entities, including chairing the County Central Dispatch Authority Board and being on the Macatawa Area Coordinating Council.
Visitation for Mr. Schrotenboer is Sunday from 4 to 7 PM at the Langeland Sterenberg Funeral Home off of East 16th Street in Holland, with an 11 AM funeral on Monday in the Chapel at Christ Memorial Church off of Graafschap Road. Memorial contributions may be given in his name to Holland Christian Schools.
