HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – Many may think teachers have it nice and easy during the summer, but many teachers do teach in the summer.
Gloria Meyer of Holland Public Schools is one of them. She is a Reading Coach and is at the center of Holland Public School’s Tuesday night reading program’s activities as well as the district’s summer school.
How does a teacher know when a student needs coaching? Meyer says it’s all based on data. ” We have certain instruments and tools that we administer and from that we can identify and dig deeper to identify the one area the students needs help in. Eventually we can targer the area where their weakness is and then intervene or provide lessons that really give more time or practice to that skill.” Meyer tells WHTC news..
The summer reading club which is offered to students in grades K-7 on Tuesday nights, is an opportunity for parents and students to get involved in reading. A grant from the Holland Education Foundation allowed them to purchase hundred’s of books of all levels for the program.
This school year HPS will start school on August 24, 2016, instead of the Tuesday following Labor Day.
