ZEELAND, MI (WHTC) – The city of Zeeland is taking action regarding the Timbertown playground at Huizenga Park. It’s deteriorating after 22 years and the city council is deciding on whether to refurbish the current equipment or to do a partial replacement and revitalize some saved portions.
Zeeland Mayor Kevin Klynstra gives tours with the second graders in Zeeland Public Schools and when they visited city hall this spring, he asked them what they felt about it. ” They would like to keep some of the old Timbertown. They said that it was unique and they would like to see some of it stay. We had a meeting a couple of weeks ago with M.C.Smith out of Holland and they do a lot of playgrounds in the area. They looked at it and they thought we could keep some old and save some money that way and keep the kids happy.”
One of the problems pointed out by the consulting firm was the lack of access for handicapped children, especially those in wheelchairs.
The price tag to renovate and address several safety issues was estimated at about $220,000 according to The Zeeland Record newspaper.
The playground was built in May of 1994. Members of the council and cemetery commission will further discuss the project in the upcoming months.
