HOLLAND (WHTC) — The Herrick District millage renewal request won by a landslide. Voters in the city as well as Park and Holland townships combined to cast 12,208 “yes” votes and fewer than 2,000 “no” votes.

Park Township
YES 3,881 – 85.1 percent
NO 680 – 14.9 percent
Holland Township
YES 3,091 – 79.6 percent
NO 793 – 20.4 percent
City of Holland
YES 5,236 – 91.9 percent
NO 463 – 8.1 percent
Holland Township voters also approved a millage to expand and maintain bike paths. Across Ottawa County, nearly 29,000 people voted to approve a 10-year millage to support county parks.
Laketown Township voters agreed to renew a millage supporting fire services, road repairs, bike paths and and drain repair and replacement.
While many primary candidates faced no opposition, others — notably 80th District State Rep. Mary Whiteford, who replaced disgraced first-time lawmaker Cindy Gamrat — had a runoff. Whiteford beat fellow Republican Abigail Nobel and will face off with Democrat John Andrysiak in November.
90th District State Rep. Daniela Garcia handily beat a challenge from fellow Republican Orlando Estrada. Garcia faces Democrat Mary Yedinak in November.
Zeeland resident and Ottawa Country Sheriff’s Capt. Steve Kempker earned 81 percent of the vote to beat challenger Chris Boyd in a race to become Ottawa County’s next Sheriff.
Republcan Frank Garcia beat fellow Republican Jim Chiodo’s primary challenge for the Ottawa County Commission’s District One seat.
Republicn Jim Lilly bested two other Republicans in a bid for the 89th District state house seat, including political gadabout Brandon Hall.
Lilly faces off with Democrat Tim Meyer in November.
