HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – Alcohol was a factor in a crash involving a wrongway driver in Zeeland Township Tuesday evening, August 16.
At around 11:49 p.m. the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office began receiving calls about a wrongway driver driving westbound on eastbound I-196 near Hudsonville. While deputies responded, the wrongway driver crashed into a vehicle driven by Benjamin Tubergan, 29, of Zeeland.
Sgt. Jay Douglas says that a 45-year-old Caledonia resident whose name is being withheld pending arraignment, was driving a 2005 Hyundai Sante Fe when he struck Tubergan’s Chevy Trailblazer. The collision forced Tubergan’s vehicle off the road and into the median where it struck a guard rail.
Tubergan was treated at the scene by AMR ambulance. The at-fault driver refused treatment and was taken into custody and is lodged in the Ottawa County Jail.
The crash closed I-196 for about an hour while the crash was investigated. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts.
