HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – The future management of the Holland Civic Center and the future of fireworks in the Tulip City are topics on the minds of Holland City Council members tonight.
During the biweekly work study session, City Manager Ryan Cotton will go over several scenarios for determining how the administration of the Civic Center, the adjacent 8th Street Marketplace and the Holland Farmers Market will be handled from 2017 and moving forward. He would like to begin the process of hiring a single operational leader as a Civic Center Place Coordinator and have that person in place this fall, especially since long-time Market Master Candy Todd and her top assistant are both retiring at the end of the current market season, and efforts to begin renovating the Civic Center and its environs are expected to begin next spring.
Also during this evening’s work-study session, Mayor Nancy DeBoer will lead the discussion into having her colleagues join her in a resolution asking the state Legislature to revise Michigan’s fireworks law. A growing number of municipalities are petitioning lawmakers to allow more local control of fireworks due to increased abuses and injuries since state laws were relaxed a few years ago. DeBoer will cite Ferrysburg’s resolution as a sample of what Holland could put forward.
The work-study session begins following a closed-door special Council meeting at 5:30 PM to review an undisclosed legal opinion.
