HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – One of the missing teens bodies has been recovered in Lake Michigan at Holland State Park.
Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Captain John Wolffis says the body was discovered in 10 feet of water near the north pier around 4:15 p.m. Thursday, September 1.
The U.S. Coast Guard called off the search after eight hours but the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Marine Division stayed on the scene with help from the Allegan County Sheriff’s Dive team and dive teams from the Michigan State Police. Divers are continuing the recovery effort till weather permits.
Christopher Mimis, 17, and Vincent Green, 14, both from Holland, along with a 19-year-old and another 17-year-old were swimming near the north pier at Holland State Park Wednesday, August 31. The other two teenagers were able to make it back safely to the rocks near the pier. The 17-year-old tried to save his 14-year-old brother, but couldn’t.
Mimis recently moved to the Holland area from Chicagoland and is a father. Green was going to attend West Ottawa High School this year.
The body has not been identified as of yet. Several of Green’s family members drove to Holland from Chicago and the family remains on the scene.
Hundreds of people have headed to the beach throughout the day to offer their support to law enforcement and the families.
