ZEELAND, MI (WHTC) – One of Zeeland’s attractions is closing early, and it’s not because of the weather or due to public indifference.
The Splash Pad has been a big hit since it opened off of the corner of Main Avenue and Elm Street downtown two years ago. The strong community response to it has led Mayor Kevin Klynstra and other city leaders to move forward on expansion plans. He told Ed Ver Schure in a Tuesday appearance on “WHTC Talk of the Town” that, “There will be some green space between the Splash Pad and City Hall, a canopy for people to sit under because shade has been at a premium this year, and then some tables with umbrellas and seats for people to sit around too.”
During Tuesday night’s meeting, Klynstra and his City Council colleagues are expected to approve an 89-thousand-500-dollar bid from Rivertown Contractors for the project, which should begin before the end of the month, with the Splash Pad ready for reopening next spring. Zeeland was able to secure a 50 thousand-dollar grant from the state DNR to help pay for the effort.
