HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – The City of Holland tonight is expected to join the growing municipal chorus across Michigan asking for changes to the state’s current fireworks laws.
On the agenda for the biweekly business meeting is a vote on a resolution, pushed by Mayor Nancy DeBoer during the last work-study session two weeks ago, to repeal a measure passed five years ago which lifted most bans on consumer explosives. The bill was meant as an economic measure to combat fireworks sales by stores near the Ohio and Indiana state lines, but it has caused more injuries and public disturbances since its enactment at the start of 2012.
Holland’s resolution, which is similar in nature to those passed in other communities, asks the Legislature to either rescind the Michigan Fireworks Safety Act of 2011 or to amend it so local governments can have more control over the use of fireworks within their jurisdictions. Such legislation is currently being considered by the state House Committee on Regulatory Reform.
